Gospel
"Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man." Luke 5:8
These were the words of Peter to Jesus upon realizing the great wisdom resident in Jesus.
Jesus had instructed the weary worn and fatigued Peter to go out morning fishing, after Peter had already properly fished all night, with no fish to show for it.
With reluctance Peter did as Jesus suggested, although the professional fisherman knew there were no fish out there; but then he did it and he caught so many fish that when they pulled the net into the boat the weight of the fish almost sank the boat.
Peter was awesomely impressed!
A boat load of fish may not impress you and me; however, when we consider that this was the way Peter made his money to provide for his family, this was Peter's source of income, then we may understand why Peter was impressed with the wisdom of Jesus, Whom he now knew was no ordinary man.
So Peter says, "Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man," and that was exactly opposite to what he needed to say.
When we, as did Peter that day, realize that we are a sinful person, we must not either run away from the Lord, nor ask Him to leave us alone, rather we need to say to Him, "Embrace me Lord, for I am a sinful person."
Our sinful state is not an offense to Jesus. It is the reason He came to this earth, to deliver us from our sins and to give us successes and victories; He loves us and wants to cleanse us, and to assist us in staying that way.
Jesus knows that there is no one except Himself Who has the power to deliver us from evils of every kind. John 14: 6
We need Jesus to embrace us and to hold on tightly to us. The glorious awesome truth is that He wants very much to do just that!
It is true that in His Holy Presence we feel shamed by our sinfulness, but He is not ashamed of us. "He is glad to call us brother." He takes our shamefulness and replaces it with deliverance and thankful praise.
"Come to me all you who are weary and loaded down, and I will give you rest."
"Open the door of your heart and I will come into your life and live with you and you with me."
"I am standing here at the door of your heart, knocking." Rev. 3:20
