The significance of the word “deflate” has been brought to our attention in recent weeks through a football. Could a small amount of air that leaked out of a football have impacted the outcome of an NFL game? Was there cheating involved? How much air leaked out or was there enough pumped in? Who had time to leak the air? All questions that the media and public continue to ponder, both those interested in football and those who are not! While the NFL appears to have taken measures to insure perfect air pressure, there lingers this mystery. Listening to the banter, I pondered the thought of linking “deflate” to something other than a football!
It’s all about what is on inside, you see. These footballs are filled up, just as our souls are filled up. Equipment managers fill the balls with air and God fills our souls with emotion; yes a perfect measure of emotion. Genesis tells us that we are made in his image and all He made was very good. That thought is so unlike the picture of pumping up footballs and the air inside. The amount of air may be affected by human error or perhaps, mechanical failure of the gauge and within the football – the air simply has no control. Whereas, God gave us free will over our emotions!
So I ask this question, have you experienced a Deflate-Gate in your life? Caught up in the struggles of this world, whether money issues, death, job loss, rebellious children, political differences, etc., your soul can become deflated. Interestingly enough, this soul “deflation” actually appears to be caused by inflation - which is most certainly that of our emotions….. In these situations fear, anger, sadness, anxiety, discouragement strengthen to crowd out bravery, joy, calmness and empowerment. Our opponent, Satan jumps up and down, cheering while emotions intensify and create havoc. We then are cheated of God’s desire for peace within our souls.
James 1:19-21
19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
James discusses having emotional control when he speaks to the early Christians about anger. He does not tell them to never be angry, but to be cautious and slow to anger. He describes how maintaining the balance of our emotions, comes through the Implanted Word. I think of this as having Jesus in my soul, and that is what allows us to gain control and produce the righteousness of God.
I struggled with this in my younger years, insisting that I couldn’t choose how I felt. Sadly, my focus was on the emotion, rather than the Implanted Word in my heart. Emotions inflated and my soul deflated. I am ever grateful for my walk with the Lord these past few years and His revealing this concept to me.
Well, despite the deflated game balls …. there was a winner of the Super Bowl trophy earlier this month. The barrage of media stories over the footballs has dwindled and will eventually disappear, yet avid fans will probably always associate the word “deflate” with the playoff games and the winner Super Bowl 49.
With regards to life - may you link the word “deflate” with the power of Jesus, which allows us to maintain the intensity of an emotion, especially when getting out of control. Call on the Lord to help “deflate” those emotions negatively impacting relationships. Pump his Word in, to bring balance and peace within your soul. Do not allow Satan to cheat you by spiraling your emotions out of control - send him out of his cheering section and into the locker room!
Psalm 86:4 Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul!
