Apologetics
Death is the perfect refrigeration of all heat in body; but death is only of the body, and not of the soul, for the soul is immortal. Anaxagoras thinks that sleep makes the operations of the body to cease; it is a corporeal passion and affects not the soul. Death is the separation of the soul from the body. Leucippus, that sleep is only of the body; but when the smaller particles cause excessive evaporation from the soul's heat, this makes death; but these affections of death and sleep are of the body, not of the soul. (Complete Works of Plutarch( 46-120 AD) - Volume 3)
Heaven or Hell
Where are YOU really going?
A person who has trusted in Jesus Christ as their Savior goes immediately to heaven to be with the Lord. In the rapture / Resurrection the dead return with Him and their bodies are raised so that their souls and spirits are joined with their now; glorified bodies. At the same time, those who are alive when Christ returns are simply transformed into their glorified bodies like that of the Savior’s. There is no intermediate place or condition of soul sleep. Rather, believers are in heaven with the Lord and very much aware of His presence.
On the Flipside, If you die without Jesus or by living as a Hypocrite and serving “another Jesus” but refuse to realize it, you will conclude in Hell and you too can be talked about as the man in Luke 16, or the rich young ruler Luke 18 , or the man who buried the talent Matthew 25 and so on.
However, your Soul will not sleep -
According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:
(Philippians 1:20-23 KJV)
A proclamation which was written at the prompting of the Holy Spirit; scarcely applies to “soul sleep”
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus, will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
(1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 KJV)
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
(2 Corinthians 5:8 KJV)
The verb “to sleep,” koimao, is used of both natural sleep (Matthew 28:13; Luke 22:45; Acts 12:6), and of the death of a Christian (Matthew 27:52; John11:11; 1 Corinthians 7:39; 11:30; 15:6, 18, 51; 2 Peter 3:4). In 1 Thessalonians 5, the word used for sleep in the Greek refers, not to physical death, but to spiritual and moral complacency. As many we know are in now and always shall be in and then we have lastly this.
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
(1 Peter 4:17-18 KJV)
Sleepers dead and cold in complacency arise and go to the nearest altar!
