The Power Of Prayer

Janice, a 16 year old high school student at Seminole High School had wanted to pray before eating her lunch at school. Her shy, self-consciousness in public places always seemed to overwhelm her. But when her boyfriend purchased and set a bowl of steaming chili before her did she bow her head in silence for a moment of prayer.
Janice was about halfway through her meal when another student at an adjacent table turned to her. “Excuse me, Janice, but were you praying?”
“Uh, well…yes, I was,” she stammered.
“Janice, would you, ah, ah? Ah, would you pray for my mom? PLEASE! My mom is in the hospital and really, really sick and I don’t know if she’s going to get better. Please, Janice would you ask God to protect her and make her better? Can you do that for me? I’m not a Christian like you. I don’t know how to pray.”
Janice assured her that she would and then watched a smile cross her worried and concerned face, a smile that buried whatever fears she had felt earlier.
“I wish I knew how to pray like you, Janice.” Then the unknown girl said: “I believe that God is with you, Janice,” as her eyes brimmed over with tears. “I don’t know who or what to do or turn to except to a Christian.” Janice could see eternal hope in a daughter’s love for her mother.
“It’s nothing, Connie. Praying is easy. All it is is talking, in this instance, to God. And even if it’s not beautiful, God will accept it. Wanna pray with me for your mom. Come on. Let’s go somewhere her at school and pray.”
“Okay.” Connie said.
Janice found it to be a wonderful request. Janice and Connie went to the school’s flagpole to say a short prayer for Connie’s mother. Connie stated that she felt an unusual feeling of the unconditional love of God surround her by the God she never recognized or knew until that moment as well as the power of prayer. For Janice, she learned that her lunchtime prayer opened the door to the healing love of God, the salvation of a fellow student and the realization that God can turn strangers into friends as they openly share the Good News.
