Luke 18:1-5 (NIV) “Then Jesus told His disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said, “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ “For some time he refused, But eventually he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care about men, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually wear me out with her coming!”
I love this parable because I relate to the widow. Coming to God morning, noon, and night for the last year with the same plea “Please bring my wife back to me.” I felt bad about nagging God with my little request, until I met the widow. My faith wavered when I received no response, but I remembered the widow. My faith grew stronger; my relationship with God became closer because I became the widow. I woke this morning and turned to my daily reading; this passage was assigned to this day, the day I went to the airport to pick up my wife!
Does persistence pay off? The Bible speaks frequently of perseverance; what did Job’s perseverance get him? Paul tells us in Romans 5:3, 4 that “suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character, and character hope.” James 1:3, 4 states, “testing of your faith produces perseverance; so let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature, complete, not lacking in anything.” Yea I think persistence and perseverance pay off. My wife and I have a long way to go, she says it may never go, but she is back and if anything I am persistent. Don’t ever give up!
