NARRATOR:
'Twas the night before Easter, and all through the land,
Nothing stirred on that Sabbath, except desert sand.
Our Savior was hung on a cross without care,
And beaten beyond what a mortal could bear.
PETER:
We disciples were sleepless and huddled in fear,
While the threats of the Romans hung very near.
Judas betrayed Him; three times I had denied;
We all ran away, and He was crucified.
JOHN:
Outside of the room there arose such a clatter,
We all jumped in fright and made quick plans to scatter.
Trembling as never I had done before,
I pulled back the lock, and threw open the door.
The glare of the dawn light sent my vision a swimmin’,
I looked with amazement at three dancing women.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
All three of the “Marys,” and all in great cheer.
PETER:
Magdeline, Salome, Christ’s mother—lively, quick,
“Grief’s gone to their heads,” I thought, “these women are sick!”
Dancing and prancing, up the stairway they came,
With joy they saw us, and shouted out our names.
MARY 1:
“Come Peter! Come Andrew! Come on out James and John!”
MARY 2:
“Follow us to the tomb of our Master—He’s gone!”
MARY 3:
“Phillip! Bartholomew! Matthew and Thomas!”
MARY 2:
“He has risen again! Just like He promised!”
PETER:
So John and I hurried. We tried hard to be brave,
Since we hadn’t a clue what we’d find at the cave.
An empty tomb; scenes we couldn’t have conceived,
But when all we found was linen…we believed!
JOHN:
Jesus appeared that evening, the Lord God himself,
And then I laughed with great joy, in spite of myself!
His face shone with glory; He dressed all in white;
He revealed His scars and set Doubting Tom right.
MARY 1:
He stayed forty days with a twinkle in His eye,
MARY 2:
Then said to us before ascending to the sky:
MARY 3:
“The words I have shared are not just for the Jews.”
MARY 1:
“You must travel the world and spread the Good News.”
MARY 2:
The Lord gave us peace and dispelled all our woes,
PETER:
Then with a nod and smile, up in the air He rose!
JOHN:
We heard Him exclaim as He sailed out of sight:
NARRATOR:
“Happy Easter to all, and to all new life!”
