Many view weeping as a sign of weakness. We instill in children, at a very early age, a need to withhold tears. “Johnny, be a big boy. Stop crying.” A man may wonder if a woman’s tears are a means of manipulation. Even in times of sorrow, we inwardly feel we should suppress our emotions, and stifle tears. Must we turn off the water-works?

Jeremiah could not. “If my head were filled with water, and if my eyes were a fountain of tears, I would cry day and night for my people who have been destroyed (Jeremiah 9:1 ERV).” Israel had been unfaithful to the Lord and was suffering the consequences.
