Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee:
because he trusteth in thee.
(Isaiah 26:3) KJV
It seems daily that the media is constantly telling us about violent acts taking place world wide. Most recently would be the beheading of innocent men in Iraq and Sudan, kidnappings, tragic car accidents, flooding, mad cow disease, west nile disease and so much more! I honestly think if I did not have my faith in Christ to keep me steadfast and to hold onto, I would find myself at a lost for peace.
Perhaps you are a young mother with little children who demand most of your time. I remember those days as well, as I anticipated moments of complete solitude as they were resting. Maybe you are a career minded individual who is caught up in the struggle of corporate America. Ah, yes, you have completely sold yourself out to a corporation that left you high and dry as they declared a need to downsize. All of the sudden, those weary long nights preparing speeches or presentations on a salaried position have left you all used up. There is no peace to be found when you have depended on your own abilities to accomplish your great feats.
Peace has become a famine in this land. I meet people everyday who either detest their job, or are in need of one. I meet young frustrated mothers who have not learned the importance of self time and reflection: Or, how about fathers who have time for everyone but their families? Let's not forget the kids in school who are being taught to look within themselves for life's answers. Is it any wonder that violence is on the increase in the schools as well as in the workplace?
I will not forget to mention the modern day conveniences that appealingly seem to bring us more time for peace in our lives. Now we have dishwashers, microwaves, washing machines, pagers, cell phones, computers, all designed to convenience us. In reality, we can now, wash dishes, cook a meal, clean the laundry, and type a report while talking on the cell phone. Does this sound peaceful to you? In the process of trying to convenience ourselves, we have caused a greater intensity of distress, all while striving for a little peace in our lives.
I have good news for you today. Peace is obtainable. We can have peace when we truly come to the realization that peace is not in ourselves, but in knowing God. Peace comes when we keep our minds focused on the plan that God has for our lives. Peace comes in knowing the Prince of Peace - Jesus.
How do we keep our minds stayed on God? Hey, I'm not asking you to become like a monk. Many people think if they surround themselves in a peaceful environment, then they will be able to focus on God continuously. The reality of being in a peaceful environment twenty four hours a day is impossible for the majority of us. However, it is not our environment that dictates peace to us. It is the Spirit within us that helps us keep calm through every storm. Our spirit is at peace because of the relationship we have with the Father. If we do not nurture that relationship, then peace will be far from us.
Many times when sleep evades me, I will lie in bed and focus on God and His Word. As soon as I start to do that, I find myself drifting off to peaceful sleep. There is nothing like a good Psalm or a cup of Proverbs to help soothe my weary mind. Peace does start in the mind. Just as this scripture above says, "whose mind is stayed on Thee." Do you find yourself in places of unrest and stress? Well you need to take control of your mind by thinking about God and His Word. When we keep our mind focused on Him, we will not be swayed by the world crises around us. We will walk in peace and comfort knowing the truth, that He is in control.
Lord, give me peace
When my world is in chaos
Help me trust You
And keep my mind on Your ways
I know not the answers
To all of my problems
But Lord, with your help
I can have peace today
Forgive me Lord
When I get so busy
Trying to make life
Easier for myself
Help me remember
The gift of Your Spirit
And the hope of peace
That comes through Your Son
May I never forget
The blessings You've given
The provision of needs
You provide everyday
May I always be thankful
For Your tender mercy
As You calm every storm
In Your own peaceful way.
