Devotionals
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering why the fellow Christian sitting next to you in church has such a consistent passion for the things of God and you don’t, you might actually have missed the core of Christianity that gives you the joy and peace God promises. One of the points made in the book of Romans is that the philosophy of the Greek culture is all about worshiping a higher thought life. For we Christians, having our mind conformed to the likeness of Christ is a part of the result of our relationship with Jesus. However, for the Greek, this is the entire point, elevating the mind of man to the level of the gods, like Zeus and Apollo, for instance.
Paul warns that the unwillingness to believe completely in Christ’s resurrection can come from a stubbornness to give up the idea that you want to create your own righteousness outside of the holiness of the Lord we are to emulate. Like little children who don’t want to be helped because they desire that sense of accomplishment, we push Jesus aside and don’t come into an intimate relationship with Him because we want to achieve a type of christian lifestyle without Christ. We believe more in what He teaches then who He is, the Son of God to be worshiped. Sitting in the pew week in and week out with no passion stirred by the spirit is a symptom of a kind of intellectual arrogance that never reaches the heart but is only cerebral in nature.
It’s easy to only be interested in hearing the message to glean ways to improve one’s lifestyle through some kind of miraculous formula to be applied without too much personal emotional investment. When you don’t have a true personal belief in the sovereignty of Christ as Savior, the thought of sharing the good news with another is intimidating. Romans 10:9 sums it up by saying, “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Matt. 10:32 goes on to say “whoever confesses Me before men, I will confess before My Father.” I encourage you not to miss the point of believing with your heart instead of just with your head and lay aside your pride in exchange for God's eternal truth.
