In the days of the prophets there were those in authority who had a hard time distinguishing between pagan prophets and a prophet of the one true God. King Zedekiah in the Jer. 37 sent Jeremiah, the Lord’s prophet, to go and pray to His God for the king. This was a king who had a multitude of soothsayers around to advise him on all kinds of matters. They were at the beck and call of the king day or night. What King Zedekiah didn’t understand about the relationship between the Lord God Almighty and His prophet was that this prophet didn’t conjure up God in some pagan ritual but was dutiful and submitted to the Lord’s will.
What kind of god do you serve? Is He a god of convenience for you? The king learned quickly that treating the prophet and His God like this was very dangerous because this is not a God one ignores. Just a few verses previous to the king asking Jeremiah to pray to his God on behalf of king, it says that neither did the king’s servants or the people of the land give heed to the word of the Lord spoken to them by the prophet Jeremiah. The consequences, therefore, were dire in that those who they thought were allies who were coming from another land actually ended up setting fire to their homes. You see, it’s a dangerous matter to inquire of a God you do not have a personal relationship with.
Praying to the Lord in a cavalier kind of way and not taking His advice without due reverence does nothing but dishonor God and show your ignorance by not understanding who it is you pray to. It’s a little bit like those grown children who do nothing but take advantage of their parents by only coming around when they need a handout, but otherwise rarely call or visit. It’s disgusting and offensive, showing an immaturity in the things of God that can only be ignored so long until your unwillingness to pray earnestly without ulterior motive catches up to you like it did King Zedekiah.
