GOD IS NOT A SPARE TYRE!
And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities. But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand. Be not wroth very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people. Isaiah 64:7-9;
Except something goes wrong in the course of a journey, may be a burst or punctured tyre, an average driver hardly remembers the spare tyre. As a matter of fact, more often than not, spare tyres are generally abandoned, neglected and completely forgotten unless the need for them arises! It happened recently that for the first time, after about two years I bought my car, I had cause to replace a burst tyre while on a trip for a function outside of town. Apart from the difficulties I had unscrewing the spare tyre from the rusty chamber it had been positioned unchecked for more than two years, I was seriously disappointed to say the least, when I also discovered that the tyre was not well gauged; my frustrations knew no limit as I stood all alone by myself on that lonely road trying to figure out how to locate a vulcanizer to put the tyre in proper shape. On that fateful evening, I regretted that my car’s spare tyre had never caught my attention in the last two years I’ve been driving the car, not until that day I found myself in trouble. I had completely forgotten the spare tyre and I paid dearly for that mistake!
It is sad that the way many people treat the Almighty God is not different from the way a spare tyre is treated! It is rather unfortunate that majority hardly remember or seek God except only in times of troubles. Many people actually do not see any need for God in their lives and daily affairs except when they find themselves in critical situations or some form of emergencies. The only time many remember that God exists is when they come to their wit ends and are in dire need of divine intervention. Regrettably, God at such times is hardly found by them for obvious reasons: either because they are too more of a stranger to be familiar with Him or they are too desperate to wait for Him!
It was never in the intention of God to create a universe in which He would lose His relevance! The Almighty God is a jealous God, He will never accept to play second fiddle in the life of anyone! To treat the Almighty God like a spare tyre therefore is to make mockery of Him. God didn’t create anyone of us to survive without Him, and any time we attempt to run our affairs neglecting and pushing Him to the background, our lives are bound to be miserable and meaningless; anyone who fails to recognize the relevance of God in his or her daily life and affairs is a living corpse!
For those who feel they don’t need God unless the need arises, it must be emphasized that there’s a time it may be too late to seek God! Isaiah 55:6 says: ‘Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near’. It is extremely dangerous to continue to treat God like a spare tyre that is hardly regarded unless there’s emergency. Proverbs 1:24-18 says: ‘Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:’ Proverbs 1:24-28;
God, as a friend that sticks closer than a brother, really desires to abide with us at all times; how near or how far He is from us however, is a function of our relationship with Him. Many believers are not enjoying the fullness of God because they have neglected the most vital aspect of their lives - which is consistent fellowship and communion with God. God wants our hearts to be completely fixed on Him at all times, neglecting our relationship with Him will only make us to dry up from inside out like a branch that has been severed from the vine. It is not surprising many believers are too weak to confront life’s challenges and hardships, it has been said that ‘it is not the presence of the devil that makes a believer look small in the face of life’s challenges, it is the absence of God!’ It is suicidal to treat God like a spare tyre you have no need for except in the time of emergency. We dishonour God when we treat Him like a spare tyre, we must repent and seek Him all the time. Acts 17:27-28; says: ‘That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring’.
