Tom Hanks starred in a movie several years ago entitled, “Big.” Do you remember the movie? The little boy and his friend had spent the day at a carnival, enjoying the rides and fun, stumbling across a fortune teller machine called, “Zoltar.” The boy put his money in the machine, but it did not work. He proceeded to beat on the big box, kick it and tilt it, until Zoltar came to life, granted his wish and he went home to sleep as only any little boy could.
The next morning revealed his wish had come true. He wakes up to find he is full grown and cannot fit in his jeans. Thanks to “Zoltar,” his life was now going to be very much different. The rest of the movie reveals the ups and downs of a grown up life, from the viewpoint of a little boys mind.
A few weeks ago we found “Zoltar,” or a replica of the famous machine, sitting outside a store at Pier Park in Panama City Beach, Florida. We were sitting outside the store, relaxing and talking with friends. Savannah, the ball of energy she is and always wanting to stuff coins in the hungry machines, ran up to the machine, pushed the levers and then found something else to look at.
Later, she returned to the machine. She stood and looked at the bearded figure with the cone shaped hat, sitting in the glass encased box. He sat there staring back at her. She jumped up, hit the glass and loudly proclaimed, “I see you in there.”
Zoltar responded, loudly and gruffly, “I see you out there. What is your wish?”
Savannah jumped as if she had been shot, dashed across the sidewalk to her mother, burying her face in Tina’s chest. I think it scared you bad enough we will most likely have to seek counseling for her in the future. And, no, the next morning she was still my little, beautiful, eight year old daughter.
If no one has ever said this to you, let me be the first and engrave this on the plate of your mind and the tablet of your heart. You do not need daily horoscopes, fortune tellers, mediums and psychics to tell you about your future. All you need is the Word of God. These other things have no place in the life of the believer and should not even be mentioned among us. The Bible clearly teaches us to stay away form such things, for they are evil and when you submit to them, they will give the Devil a foothold in your life.
While some say it is good entertainment, a laugh to read; others take the words printed or said by these mediums as gospel truth. We must stay as far away from such things as we can, living separated lives, pleasing God and not man. For the plans God has for us are not found in tea leaves or the palms of our hands.
My verse of scripture for the year is from Jeremiah 29:11 and it says, “’For I know the plans I have for you’—[this is] the LORD’s declaration—‘plans for [your] welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.’” (HCSB)
That is all of the “future telling” you and I need right there. We have a God who knows our future and holds it in the palm of His big, strong, mighty hands. He has a purpose for us and will work out that purpose in our lives. His plan is in our best interest, and the end result is hope here and a future with Him.
We must willingly commit ourselves and all that we have to Him to use in His plan for our lives. The wise writer of Proverbs tells us that we must trust in God with all of our heart, not lean on what we know or think we know because in the end we are mere mortals and God is…well, God. Solomon goes on to say, “In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) That sounds more like the way we should go than trying to figure things out with all the worlds ways of trying to see into the future.
