"And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors." - Matthew 6:12
Last night I saw a movie called "The Debt". Theatrically it was a great movie. Spiritually the movie was very troubling. The film tells the story of a Jewish team of three people, two men and one woman, sent out by their Israeli government to track down a man known as the Surgeon of Burkenau, a Nazi war criminal that operated and had done horrific things to Jews in that concentration camp.
This is a difficult thing to write because I know of the horror of the Holocaust and the crimes against the Jews that were perpetrated at that time. That was a monstrous period in earth's history that must not be forgotten. It truly was a travesty against the life and culture of a people and a nation.
What I could not help notice, though, was how the things that were happening to this team, Rachel, Stephen and David, was the result of the bitterness that had poisoned their lives because of their hatred they had focused on their person of interest. While it is understandable why they had such animosity against this "Butcher of Burkenau" it was equally clear that their own bitterness was destroying their team. Because of their contempt for the man they pursued and caught one was disfigured, a love between a man and the woman in the team was never realized and each person had grown to distrust and disrespect each other. While the sins committed by the Surgeon was atrocious equal was the atrocity that unfolded among the team of the three. The horror of sin not only lies in the act or acts itself but in also what it breeds: contemptuous hatred corrupting into the poison of bitterness. While the survivors of the Holocaust were free from the concentration camps many, like this trio, were trapped in their own hatred that also corrupted the relationships among themselves.
Being a Christian I cannot help but remember the atrocity that was committed against another Jew, not only by one nation but by many by hanging Him on a cross. The contempt the world had (has?) against this Jesus not only sought to destroy Him but is still destroying the world itself through war, distrust between nations and many other social injustices from lying to outright murder.
I have to ask myself, "What is the true Holocaust?"
I felt it amazingly appropriate that this movie was entitled "The Debt" because it reminded me that the murder that the world had perpetrated against the Life also paid for the debt it had incurred against itself and against this Man Jesus. That includes the debt incurred by men like the Butcher of Burkenau against their victims the Jews. Still it is sad to keep in mind how many do not realize what happened in that Holocaust two thousand years ago.
