His hands reached for the board, and as I watched, I found myself mesmerized by his touch. How he carefully laid out each piece gently, so as not to break it. The pieces were nice enough; hand-carved, with precious detail running through them.
I felt fascinated as I looked at them. Each one being so alike, and yet so different from the others. He offered me the white pieces, as he tended to favor the dark. And soon, we were engaged in a captivating game of chess.
My first move, as was his, was my knight to Queen's bishop three. The game continued for what seemed an eternity, though I know it was only a short while. Soon, I began to recognize a pattern emerging.
With every piece of his I was able to capture, he, without my understanding how, was able to capture the same piece, or one better of mine. At some point, although I'm not entirely certain when, he began to gain the advantage. I was no longer playing my game. I was trying desperately to keep him from winning his...
His moves were ever subtle, his manner, so discreet.
And there was even one point, I could have sworn I saw him cheat.
But still, I kept on playing, fascinated by his grace.
I never noticed who he was, until I saw his face.
His eyes were red and glowing, his hands, now taloned claws,
I was face to face with Satan, and all of Satan's laws.
The game was nearly over. The sweat rolled down my neck.
At his last and final move, I saw him smile,
I was in check.
I carefully studied every move. I knew I had to win.
But I realized I was defeated, until I turned, and I saw Him.
Jesus came and sat beside me, although I knew it was too late.
Then He moved the remaining pawn I had, turned to Satan and said,
"Checkmate."
