Faith
“But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor
the Son, but only the Father. For as the days of Noah were, so will be the
coming of the Son of Man….Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day
your Lord is coming…therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is
coming at an unexpected hour.”
Selected verses from Matthew 24:36 – 44
I’m sure what Jesus really meant to say was that he was coming back at
6:00pm on Saturday, May 21st, 2011. I’m glad Harold Camping has cleared that
up for us.
What makes me sad today is that the world’s been given another reason to
believe that Christianity is silly and irrelevant, and that the followers of
Jesus are basically cartoon caricatures not to be taken seriously.
What makes me sad today is that many followers of our latest doomsday
prophet will spend this evening disappointed and disillusioned – they’ll feel as
if God has let them down, that they have believed in vain, and will have a
difficult time picking up the pieces of their shattered faith. For some, their
faith will be the only thing raptured away, caught up into the air like a
disappearing vapor.
However, I suspect for others it will simply mean that it's on to the next
day circled in red on the calendar.
And though Jesus reminds us in Matthew that the day of his appearing will
not be preceded by billboards, news stories or mass hysteria – he does caution
us about skipping along without a care in the world, living unto ourselves with
no thought of accountability or judgment.
There is most assuredly a time for each of us when it will be too late –
too late to say “I’m sorry”…
….or “I love you”.
too late to make a difference…
….or make a change.
too late to develop deep spiritual resources…
too late to forgive
or to ask for forgiveness
too late to be faithful
too late to be joyful or trusting or dependable
too late to be ready to die!
Today, while many count down the minutes to the anticipated “catching
up” in the clouds, I invite each of us to take a look at our own lives,
considering this: In our living, are we bearing witness to God’s great gift of
life? And shall we be ready when we see Jesus face to face, “at an unexpected
hour?”
