John 3:16
KJV - For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.
NIV - " For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life."
God's Word has a supernatural effect. That is why Christians are compelled to share it with an unbelieving world. God gave us the tools we need to help convert those we may consider unreachable. The Holy Spirit indwells us and His words of truth change the barren soul into one teeming with eternal life. As Jesus spoke these words to Nicodemus, He told the world how easy it is to accept God's eternal love and be saved.
Chances are good that John 3:16 was among the first scriptures you learned. The truth of God is contained in these 25 words. Words that offer hope, words that tell us how much God loves, and that He wants us to be with him forever.
However, many today do not have even a basic understanding of the Bible. As we encounter lost souls, adrift and searching, it is our duty and privilege to expose them to a repertoire of scripture that offers hope. Don't try to explain scripture, show them scripture. God's Word speaks for itself.
It may be a helpful analogy to consider a student about to take a difficult test without any preparation. Chances of success are greatly diminished without a knowledge of the subject, time to prepare, and some idea of the test's content. We cannot expect non-Christians to embrace God's love without exposing them to His promises. Just as Nicodemus could not distinguish between a natural and spiritual birth, He needed scripture to clarify and explain God's plan for his life. Lost people are not impressed with our promises, but God's promises will save their souls. I am vowing to compile a list of 20 verses to present to the next lost person that wants to discuss God's truth in the Bible. I am going to use that list in all future witnessing endeavors.
