Whether we bear fruit with the word of God sown into our lives is a function of the kind of heart we have; the kind of soil we are. Every seed has a range of soil types where it can germinate, mature and produce more seed or fruit. So it is with the word of God.
The word of God just like any seed has the ability to reproduce itself; the ability to produce what it promises. But like every other seed this is not a guarantee unless the environmental conditions [other factors] necessary for germination and growth process of the word is put in place in our lives.
Now many wonder why they have not or do not see the result of the word of God in their lives, or the life of someone they know and so have lost hope or become disgruntled, or generally do not believe. Here is the simple reason: In the Parable of the Sower (Luke 8:4-15) the path upon which some seeds fell represents the hearts of those who have no place for the word of God in their lives. So the devil finds it easy to come and steal away the word so that they do not believe and benefit of it [or are saved]. The rock represents the hearts of those who have not decided to stick with God [and His word] come what may and so fall away in challenging times. The ground with the thorns is the hearts of those who have not dealt with the problem of life’s worries, riches and pleasure in their lives and so are choked by them. And good soil is the hearts of those who have a place for the word of God in their lives, made up their minds to stick to the word of God come what may, dealt with the problem of life’s worries, riches and pleasure in their lives and are willing to get to the very end with God [on the particular matter]. And the devil cannot take away what was sown from them: these are the people who by persevering produce a crop a hundred, sixty and thirty times what was sown. And how much depends on our understanding [which is the soil quality] (Matt. 13:23).
We are responsible for the kind of hearts we have. Simply put: we are responsible for the kind of person we are. We may not be responsible for the actions that brought us to where we are today but we are responsible for what we have allowed ourselves to become and are responsible for our remaining there. Everyone can open up the door of his heart and what you open up to is up to you.
No one should blame God for the hardness of his heart for when the sun rises upon a block of ice and a mound of clay the results are different. The block of ice melts while the mound of clay hardens. You choose which type of material your heart will be for the God will remain who He is.
So check yourself according to definitions of the different kinds of grounds in the parable of the Sower and know what to expect of the word of God and make necessary changes where applicable. Truly the word of God is able to produce that which it promises.
