Psalm 119.60
Are you quick to obey?
“I hastened and did not delay to keep Your commandments” [Psalm 119.60 NASB]
As soon as David knew and understood that there was the slightest hint of unorthodox and unseemly behaviour, either in thought, word or deed in his life, he remedied it.
Isaiah remarked that one of the characteristics that marked out the Servant of the Lord from His contemporaries was that He would “delight in the fear of the Lord” [Isaiah 11.3]
David did not get to where he was in his spiritual life, without practicing sensitivity to the Spirit. Are we also growing as we walk with the Lord? If not, is it possible that we need to conform to the practice of the early disciples who were walking “in the fear of the Lord” [Acts 9.31]
How can we grow in the fear of the Lord? There are two foundation principles, which may assist us in our quest, an exodus and an entrance. One day we will be leaving where we are and going to live with the Lord. Therefore, the scriptural principles of individual responsibility and divine accountability need to control and motivate our actions.
Solomon knew, probably more than most, the terrible dangers of the enemy’s diversionary tactics. He warned us of the little things that will, time and time again, detract our vision and interest from the work of God, especially at harvest time [Song of Solomon 2.15].
Do we need to examine closely our heart and our priorities? It is possible, as the disciples knew in John 4:30-38, to walk with the Lord and yet not "see" what He could see. They saw hindrances – He saw a harvest.
What do we see when we look at our circumstances? In Ezra 5, at a very difficult time in their lives, the enemy had successfully persuaded the builder's to take their eyes off of a very important work and place them instead on what man had said, which, in effect, stopped the work - at least briefly until God used King Darius in their favour [Ezra 6:1-13].
Are we in a similar situation? Paralysed by fear and crippled in our desires? It was at such a time as this that Haggai and Zechariah exhorted the people to restart their ministry and the outcome was glorious.
For the child of God,
Abdication is out.
Application is in. [David McArdle]
