Who Am I?
John 3:16-18 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (KJV)
Who am I that the King of Glory would be willing to leave his home in Heaven, take on the life of a lowly human, and die for me? That is a very deep question and one that I have been pondering about for a while. I am going to try to answer this question in the short amount of time I have.
First let’s take a look at some background information. Neh 9:6 6 Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee. (KJV)
Before God created the Heavens and the earth God created the Angels. They were to worship him and to do whatever he needed them to do. There were 3 Arch angels (otherwise known as the angel supervisors) and an innumerable number of worker angels if you will. Things were going very well and everyone was doing just what they were supposed to do. When the time came that Lucifer, the most beautiful angel, decided that he was going to take over the throne of God. God stood up, commanded that a place called Hell be created full of darkness, so dark that they will not be able to see anything at all, with a place in the center called the lake of Fire. God said: this place will be only for those who rebel against us, or refuse to accept My Son’s sacrifice. God then cast Lucifer out of heaven along with all who stood with him. Isaiah 14:12-15 12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. (KJV) Lucifer was the Chief musician in heaven and he had direct access to the throne of God and the mountain that the throne was set upon. Lucifer would come and go as necessary to ensure that God was being worshipped in the manner that was set for him to be worshipped. But when he decided to take over heaven and throw God out he built him up an army to follow him the count is unknown but it was a full 1/3 of the angels. Lucifer and these angels were condemned to Hell. They were cast out of Heaven and set upon the earth until the end of time was to be. When the end of time is fulfilled then Lucifer and his followers are to be placed into the lake of Fire. But there is nowhere in the Bible that states that they will ever have the chance to be redeemed, they are doomed from the time of the fall, for all of eternity.
Next let’s take a look at man. Gen 1:26 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (KJV) God created man in his image and gave him full authority over every living creature on the earth. He gave him a place to live where everything would be taken care of for him and all he had to do was to tend the Garden of Eden. There was no major work involved. Man would walk and talk with God face to face in the cool of the evening. One day as Adam was naming the animals he found that there was no one of his kind but him, so God created woman. God explained to them that they could eat of every tree in the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God also explained to them that if they did eat of it they would die, not get sick and then get well but that they would die. Everything was going good until the time came when Lucifer the fallen arch angel, borrowed the body of a serpent which was the most beautiful animal on earth at the time, came to the garden and started talking to Eve. As they were talking the subject of the tree came up and Lucifer convinced Eve that the tree was a very good tree to eat from and that God was holding out on them. So Eve took of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and she ate of the fruit of it, she then turned to Adam and gave him some and he did eat also. When they had eaten of the fruit, man fell. But when they explained to God what had happened God produced the provision for the redemption of man. What makes man so special to God that he made a plan of redemption for man but condemned the fallen angels to eternity in Hell? Gen 3:15 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. (KJV) This is the first promise in the Bible that states that man will be redeemed. This is the promise of the Lord Jesus Christ to be sent to redeem man from his sin. Throughout the Old Testament there are many other promises of the coming Redeemer the Lord Jesus Christ the Messiah.
The angels were God’s first creation and 1/3 of them fell along with the chief Arch angel and they are doomed to hell…Why? Because they were banded together to take over Heaven and to run it in a way that was contrary to God’s plan. They had produced the first case of pure rebellion and God hates rebellion. In order for them to never try it again God banished them from heaven.
Why is man so special that he is able to be redeemed? Man was created in the image of God. Man was God’s pride and joy. That is why God spent time walking and talking to man in the garden in the cool of the evening. To the point of mans fall he had never once threatened God in any way he was just disobedient to God. Man never tried to take over and even when man fell he was ashamed of what he had done. Did any of this surprise God? Not for a second. God knew what was going to happen long before he created the earth. He knew how man was to react before he created the angels. God knew that Lucifer was going to turn against him before he created any of the angels. So why did he do it? God went through with it so that he would have a creation that would serve him because they wanted to and not because they had to. From the very beginning God wanted a creation that would do what he asked without question. He never wanted a robot. He wanted someone that would love him without any thing held back. Someone that would do what he asked of them without any reservations. For the most part man has done that. With Lucifer walking around on the earth and making man follow him then rewarding man for doing what he asks, man has a choice, man can either follow God and his plan or follow Lucifer and his plan. The difference being that God’s plan is righteousness and love ending up in Heaven. And Lucifer’s plan is hate and destruction ending up in Hell and the Lake of Fire. Lucifer is smart enough that he doesn’t tell the end of the story he just tells his followers enough to keep them following him. But God loves us enough to tell us the entire story with both sides of the story. This way we have the true choice in the matter and God leaves the choice to us.
So who am I that the King of Glory would leave his throne and die for me? I could answer I am Duane a Sunday school superintendent and a preacher and God would say, so what. I could say I am the son of Mr. and Mrs. Huffstutler and God would answer, so what. I could also say that I was a sinner and I believe in the Son of the Almighty God whose name is Jesus Christ and I have accepted him into my life and agreed to live for him for the rest of my life, and have been washed in the Blood of Christ and God would answer, welcome home son. So, who am I that the King would die for me? I am a redeemed child of the Almighty God. As long as we do what God asks us to do without question and without an argument God will do whatever is necessary to bring us home even if it costs him his only Son. What we must remember is that Christ died on the cross one time and it will never happen again. Christ shed his blood on the cross of Golgotha one time and the next time he comes he will come as the conquering King of Kings and Lord of Lords. And we will be with him to rule and reign with him over the New Heaven and the Earth. As a man made in the image of God, God loved us so much that he would pay whatever price necessary to keep his master creation. Yes, he knew that man would shake his fist in his face and call him everything but God. He also knew that some men would worship him in Spirit and in Truth and for him to get a creation that would worship him in Spirit and in Truth the risk was worth it. Which way are you going to follow, are you going to shake your fist in the face of God and call him names or are you going to follow him and worship him? The choice is yours.
Why didn’t the angels get a chance at redemption? The angels didn’t get a chance at redemption because the angels rebelled without remorse. Why did man get a chance of redemption? Man got his chance for redemption because man was humble and ashamed of his sin.
