Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday March 23, 2010
It is amazing to me how the Lord uses the pitiful offerings from my pen to touch others and how in turn the Lord uses touched people to touch me. The March 15th letter touched several and my old friend Dave Thomas responded with this gem:
"Larry; A line in your letter did jump out at me, as it reminded me of an incident I witnessed on a construction job years ago, said line being: "Working harder probably is NOT the answer. Working more effectively is the only sensible answer."
I was working at my assignment, installing electrical equipment in a building, while a few steps away, a young plumber was feverishly at work making hanger rods for a sprinkler line soon to be hung overhead. He soon discovered that he had made several dozen rods that were too short to be used. His boss was not happy about the error, and was speaking to him very unkindly.
The young man asked, "Don't you think I work harder than any man you have?" To which his foreman immediately replied, "Dick, You have to do that. The rest of us know what we're doing." I managed to avoid provoking either of them by turning my back to them, and biting my lip severely. Dave."
When I was in training for my pilot's license I had the privilege of receiving said training from a former Marine Fighter Pilot. He taught me things I never needed to know, but though he started the project as a young man, he aged very fast during the procedure. He was adamant that I learn every possible thing to learn about the plane, the equipment, the reason for this and the proper verbiage and tone (Yeager) for communicating. I took instrument training with Dan Baldwin and we were using my Aztec and we never practiced instrument procedures with both engines, but always used engine out procedures, for as he often said, "Any ….fool can fly the plane with everything working." I am still alive after all these years.
An old song has it, "Do what you do well, son, do what you do, do well." Pretty good advice. And right on target with biblical principles. Paul expressed this principle in 2 Timothy 2:15:
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
