Poetry
The organ remained locked and silent
As it had for many years
Sheltered from the world outside
Secluded by the caretaker’s fears.
One day a young soldier
Knocked upon the church’s door.
Asking if he could spend just one hour
To let the organ be played once more.
The caretaker was insistent
The organ would not be played
Until the organist returned from the war
Locked and silent was how it stayed.
The soldier began to appeal
He had walked such a long way
But despite all his pleading
The caretaker would not sway
The young soldier hung his head
And began to sadly walk away
He mentioned as he departed
He’d be sent to battle the very next day.
The old man finally relented
And gave the young man the key
He told him just one hour
That’s all the time there would be.
The young man unlocked the treasured organ
His fingers lovinly stroked the keys
Heavenly sounds rang through the chapel
Causing the old man to fall to his knees.
People began to gather in masses
To hear the young man play
Tears flowed down the old man’s face
For he realized what he had done that day.
He had given the key to the master
To unlock all the beauty within.
Now a magnificent instrument stood
Where once a hushed organ had been.
Our heart is like that organ
Silently locked away
Not until we give the key to the Master
Will we hear the music it has to play.
