Your Body is a Temple
There have been many temples built throughout history for many different gods, but they all have a common purpose – to worship, honor, and sacrifice to that god. In old testament times, when you wanted to worship, honor, and give thanks to the One True God, you went to the temple in Jerusalem bringing with you an offering, a sacrifice. When the Son of God came down and became a man, He also became our perfect sacrifice so that our sins could be made clean forever. A sacrifice for sin never needs to be made again for, “Christ died once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous to bring you to God… (1 Peter 3:18)”. Having cleansed us and purchased us with His own precious blood (1 Peter 1:19), He sent His Holy Spirit to live inside of us, making us His temple forever. Your body is important to God, so important in fact that on the last day He will resurrect it, glorify it, and give it back to you (1 Corinthians 15:42-44, Philippians 3:21). Therefore, we should care for our bodies like we would care for His temple and we should act like a temple – that is, we should honor, worship, and glorify God in everything we think, say, and do (1 Corinthians 10:31) and we should offer all of our selves and our lives to God as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1).
There are many aspects included in taking care of yourself, so that you may be available for God’s service. You must do what you know to do to maintain your physical health – this means a healthy diet, proper exercise, lots of water, and a full night’s sleep every night. Since the mind, emotions, and body are all linked, it is just as important to take care of your emotional, spiritual, and mental health – this means scheduling time to be alone for prayer and to simply rest in God’s presence, learning how to relax, being intentional about spending time with those who encourage you and make you laugh. You are not being selfish or wasting time when you do these things, rather, you are honoring God by tending to His temple. The more consistent you are at maintaining all these things with God’s help (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual - 1 Thessalonians 5:23) the more prepared, better equipped, and more useful you will be in all areas of your service to God. Lastly, you must also quit harmful habits such as smoking, drinking, gluttony, sloth, and anything else that damages your temple (including excessive doses of caffeine) as well as quitting other mentally damaging things like porn, lust, promiscuity, worry, fear, and anxiety. There are many other things that could be added to these lists, but the bottom line is this; God bought you (every part of you) with His own blood and if you belong to Him then you ought to show it by honoring Him in everything you do.
Point to Ponder
Which of the areas about maintaining your health do you most need to work on? What are some harmful habits you need to drop? Are you ready to let your life glorify God in everything you do? There is mo better time to start than today, make that decision and ask God for His help.
Let’s pray, “Lord, thank You for saving us, for washing away our sin, and making us Yours. Thank You for giving us Your Holy Spirit by whom we are sealed as Yours forever. Help us in our desire to honor You in everything we do as Your temple, by the power of Your Spirit. Help us have the motivation and understanding to take good care of our bodies – to do the things we need to do and to quit the things we need to quit. Give us courage and strength that we might do everything for Your glory and to honor You. In the name of Jesus Christ, by whose blood we were purchased, we pray. Amen.”
