Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday July 2, 2009
This weekend we celebrate or should, the Declaration of Independence, the 4th of July, officially called Independence Day. Many at the time of the signing supposed it to be an all in all document that set men free from all things. Many in our nation still cling to this asinine idea.
To be independent spiritually or nationally means to be independent from tyranny, but not from responsibility. Our age has witnessed the rise of a lack of responsible thinking and living. Millions of children will be thrilled at the celebratory tilt of the weekend, and while they are so enthralled an abandoned mother will wonder where oh where the next meal will come from. The father is kidding himself into believing that he is released from responsibility to the child or children. This is not independence, but direct rebellion to God's word and plan. And so it goes across the board. We have obligations to liberty that are often more arduous than the chains of the preceding tyranny.
The sum total, the beginning and end of our Liberty is the right to be what God intended, to live, breathe and act within the bounds of civilized society as we climb the highest mountain of our fondest dreams.
Jesus Christ told His disciples in John 10:10 "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
The tragedy of our hour is that we have lost the vision and power of the early believers as they sought to march throughout the world proclaiming the majesty of Christ and in doing this reached the apex of the fulfilled life, living life with the ultimate meaning. From the rag tag army of ignorant and unlearned fishermen, we, the church have become akin to the ravenous mobs that sat in the Coliseums and watched humble servants of Christ torn to bits by the lions and we need medication to cope with our utter boredom.
The question in many circles this year is; "How much are you spending on fireworks?" In the days of Nero we were the fireworks. The happiest people I know are ones who are passionately engaged in a work for Jesus and know their living is not in vain.
For the "Fourth" I am suggesting that you rebel against boredom and mind numbing heart stifling self centeredness and take the hand of Jesus and march around with Him and thus find real inner life. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said:
"An unused life is but an early death."
You know he was right.
