She trembles on the shore.
HE SAILS AWAY ON AN OCEAN OF HER TEARS
The pain is wrenching
As the covenant cord stretches, stretches -
Then snaps like a whip, throwing her to the
Shifting sand, bruised - aching - weeping.
HE SAILS ON AND ON - FREE
Vows made long ago seem to bellow from
The depths of her confusion.
Good grief! She took his NAME. They had a child.
Who IS that heading for the open waters?
HE IS BARELY VISIBLE NOW,
A DOT IN THE DISTANCE
She lies crumpled, thrown away.
A strong woman, she struggles for higher ground,
A dry place to plant her feet,
To raise her son, to wait for God
It is hard to breathe, to think, to pray
But an untraveled road is waiting.
Upright now, she realizes it is time to go,
There is nothing else to do
She is afraid to look again
To see the last of his disappearing.
He may be sinking, or hurt
And he has no LIFE PRESERVER
Driven to her knees
By the unrelenting pain,
She beseeches the dark and infinite heavens,
"Dear Lord, please RESCUE him"
HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW
(Five years pass)
Time and prayer have carried her
Through the raging storm of grief
To a safe shelter
Of forgiveness and acceptance.
Once again, standing on the shore,
Refreshed by the breeze of a new day,
She gives thanks to her Lord
The only Captain of her soul.
It was not easy,
The brambled path to here.
But she was never alone-
Jesus was her lighthouse, her navigator, her friend
Briefly, she glances at the horizon,
No longer mourning what was lost
But still praying that he has navigated
To his own harbor of safety.
Bad memories, lurking like sharp rocks,
Have lost all power.
Good memories rise to the surface
In cleansing, healing waves
Feeling the warmth of the sun,
She smiles, lifting her arms.
Then,
Turning toward home
She begins to hum.
