St. John 4:7 says “Then Cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me Drink, for his disciples were gone away unto buy meat. Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, how is it that thou being a Jew askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her. If thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee, give me to drink thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him sir thou hast nothing to draw with and the well is deep: from whence then has thou living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob which gave us the well and drank there of himself and his children and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never thirst; the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing into everlasting life. So my subject is: Did you drink of the living water?
Now the word water is of significant scientific meaning. The Merriam collegiate dictionary defines water as a liquid that descends from the clouds as rain, forms streams, lakes, and seas, and is less and tasteless. It is a very slightly compressible liquid, oxide of hydrogen h2o which appears bluish in thick layers, freezes at 0c and boils at 100c, has a maximum density a 4c and a high specific heat. It is feebly ionized to hydrogen and hydroxyl ions, and is a poor conductor of electricity and a good solvent.
Water is necessary for our existence. Without drinking water we can only live for a few days. It is said that the human body is made up of approximately 70% water and the earth is about 90%. Every food consists or is made of water. You also need water to take a bath, wash your car and wash your clothes.
The water that Jesus is talking about is a different type of water. Based on the scripture, it says the woman went to the well for drinking water. But Jesus in his awesomeness came along and said give me to drink. She was surprised because the Jews did not deal with the Samaritans. See the woman did not know who Jesus was. She just wanted some water, but what she needed was much greater than drinking water. That is why Jesus said the water that I give, you shall never thirst, so he offered her the living water. The living water is he, the key to eternal life.
Now the bible said she had five husbands so that means she was an Adulteress. This woman was walking dead in her sins. That is how it is with everyone who is not saved. Jesus is waiting. He is looking for people who are thirsty for the living water. Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life”. Keep the living water. Amen.
