With the same intention - to go and pray.
One was a Pharisee proud and tall
The other a tax collector quiet and small
"Thank God," boomed the first, "I'm a righteous man
I don't lie or cheat, and I fast when I can.
I tithe my income and I love my wife
In fact I lead a sinless life."
The second man stood and bowed his head
Not looking t'ward heaven, but the floor instead.
He prayed for mercy and forgiveness too
And he beat his breast like the contrite do.
Which prayer resounded in the heavens above?
Whose words touched the God of Love?
Not the Pharisee, proud, so full of pride,
But the man who was sorry and broken inside.
Let us learn from this man, so humble and meek,
As we come before God, his face to seek
Not resting on actions or the "good" things we do,
God's mercy alone is what we cling to.
