“Hey, Jasmine!” Amber caught her with a book in hand while staring infinitely into space.
“Huh? Oh, hey there. You go on ahead. I need to finish a couple of pages more.” Jasmine said, fully aware that she had to read a lot more than that.
“Ok then. Oh yeah. The music director phoned in a while ago and said that he’ll be checking our attendance before and after the concert, to be sure that we’re there. Tough requirement for membership in the choir, huh?” Amanda said as she waved goodbye.
Jasmine continued reading, but she barely understood what the book said with the concert twenty-five minutes away. “It would take a miracle to survive this,” Jasmine thought, “Or a stroke of genius. Then it hit her. Getting her voice recorder from her bag, she pressed the record button and began to dictate, word for word, every item in her book.
God was there in the concert, and those present found themselves too attached to earthly concerns, and too overwhelmed by His presence that it was folly not to draw nearer to Him. With the worship leader’s shout everyone just sang their own song to God, and prayed, and told Him what was in their hearts. Amber was silent, preferring to be still and let God speak to her. She heard a different voice instead.
“You know Jasmine,” Amber whispered, “If glucose reactions inside the mitochondria is what’s in your heart, we have a very big problem.” Amanda saw an earphone on one of Jasmine’s ear connected to her voice recorder that was playing back, it seemed to her, Jasmine’s biology reviewer.
“Sorry, Amber. I didn’t know I’d be heard.”
“Well that’s not the problem. We’re supposed to be worshipping?”
Jasmine took her earphones off. “I’m sorry, but I need to review. And you know that we’re required to see this show or the music director won’t approve our membership to the church choir.”
“I know that, Jasmine. Still, you know what you’re doing is wrong, right?”
“Yeah. Well look – I’m not determined not to cheat…”
Amber cut her off. “So you won’t cheat on your bio test but you will cheat on God, is that it? Being in the concert might convince the music director to approve you, but I don’t think God will.” She added an afterthought. “I’m not sure if this scripture is in context to the problem at hand, but, ‘God is a jealous God’.”
Jasmine sat down and shrugged. “You’re right. I should be in the concert for God. Well, I’d better go home and study. ‘Guess we won’t be getting in the choir together, huh?”
Amber considered her remark, and then sighed. “Aw, what the heck. I’ll walk you home.”
“No! You finish the rest of the concert. The music director will check the attendance after the concert, remember?”
“And someone needs to make sure that you go home and study and not just sit on the back row meditating on the glory of the cell and the majesty of the nucleus.” Amber smirked at her own remark, thinking it was cool, and took Jasmine’s hand. The two of them walked towards the exit, knowing fully well the consequence of their actions, but that was all right. There were tests today that had to be passed, more than a biology exam or a musical director’s requirement. And, considering what just happened, Amber had a good feeling that she passed this one.
