James delivers an excellent example of partiality in chapter 2, verses 2-7. Supposing a rich man and a poor man came into your church, “If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes…have you not discriminated among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?” (James 2:3,4, NIV).
How often do we unconsciously draw conclusions concerning people based solely upon their outward appearances? A look of disgust may absently cross our faces when an unkempt or even socially awkward person draws near. Our first impressions usually cloud our actions toward that person.
We must step back and see people fresh through God’s eyes. If we are to be of use to God, we have to relinquish those biases that we hold so dear. We must learn to renounce our senses that will never give us the full picture of another human being. Only through God’s eyes can we hope to see the inherent worth of every other life. Only through God’s eyes can we see past the anger to the hurt. Only through God’s eyes can we see past the mask to the potential.
We will never be able to fully participate in the Cause of Christ until we leave our biases and prejudices behind and learn to see through God’s eyes.

Application: What biases do I possess that obstruct my view of people? What area of my life can I release so that I may be of use to Him?
