Our house used to be infested with roaches. At night upon entering and turning on the kitchen light, the whole floor would reel with their movement, as they sought the comfort of dark cracks.
Jesus described people who love evil in a similar way. " . . . Light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil" (John 3:19.) The prince of darkness himself masquerades as an angel of light, but his ultimate purpose is to keep people in the dark.
Our natural inclination is, like the roaches, to run into the darkness and hide our wicked deeds. If we prefer to stay in darkness, the Lord will let us have our way. In fact, He lets us be deceived by unrighteousness, if that is what we really want. (See 2 Thess. 2: 10-12.) But in reality, we are only deceiving ourselves into thinking what we are doing is all right.
On one occasion during those roachy years, our home school group asked every family to bring in a sample insect. I found an albino roach, which I thought was unique. After the creature sat in a jar for a day, however, we learned an interesting fact about these insects. A white roach is one that has never been in the light. When it is exposed to light, it turns dark. Similarly, the darkness in our own souls becomes evident when we let God's light shine on us.
Thankfully, the Light has come into the world to call us out of darkness to Himself. He calls us through His Word. "The entrance of thy words giveth light . . ." wrote the Psalmist. (Ps. 119:130) Jesus said, "But he that doeth truth cometh to the light . . ." (John 3:21.)
Don't be like a roach! Run, sinner, run to the Light of the world! Let Him expose your deeds for what they really are, cleanse you with His blood, and make you white as snow. Then you, too, can be an agent of light in this dark world.
