When His creative work was done
A day He sanctified and blessed
Foreshadowing a day to come.
Israel in the Promised Land
Were meant to find a place of rest,
They saw the works of God firsthand
Yet of that land were dispossessed.
The Sabbath rest was commandeered
By legalistic Pharisees,
The rest intended disappeared
Replaced instead by stern decrees.
Into this restless vacuum came
The Lord of Glory undisclosed—
Lord of the Sabbath was His claim—
What a threat His presence posed!
Personifying God’s true rest
All those who came to Him found peace,
He freed from bondage the oppressed,
And brought the demon-bound release.
Though all His works were only good
And His word declared His name
None of the wicked understood;
They plotted, made His death their aim.
And so they hanged Him on that hill,
Self-satisfied by their awful deed,
They didn’t know The Father’s will—
They had effected as decreed.
“It is finished” echoes clear
Down through the ages to this day—
Precious words for ‘ears that hear’—
What a hope these words convey.
We who believe have entered rest,
Foreshadowed rest of the seventh day,
Never to be dispossessed—
So soon He’ll catch His Bride away
To the everlasting Sabbath Day.
