Too much time was spent re-routing as I barreled along, not sure which direction to go. Every new map presented a beckoning course. Every unexpected roadblock sent me to the wrong places. When the last heap of metaphoric metal on bald tires bit the dust, I was begging for rides—always a dangerous and ill-conceived plan.
As years flew by, the stockpile of ever-changing contraptions vaguely resembling the minimum in roadworthiness continued to control me as I careened toward the diminishing hope of finding the perfect exit sign.
Finally, defeated and in total exhaustion, the battery of my soul flickered, and I keeled over in a mass of powerless desolation.
It was ice cold and raining. I was dirty, hungry, weak, and at the mercy of a universe with no answer. Lying on the side of an obscure road and waiting for someone to rescue me, preferably an ambulance, I whimpered like a sick kitten, barely able to utter a sound.
Convinced that any noise from me would be drowned by the storm, and that I was on a foolish pathway, I whispered one word.
“Help.”
Shivering and drenched in the unforgiving deluge, I almost missed the sound of a stopping vehicle. Although I had never ridden in something this sleek and futuristic, I knew that modern robotics and intelligence had produced amazing high-tech transportation.
The back door opened quietly, and a soothing voice told me to get in.
“But I’m so filthy, and all that muddy mess will ruin this pristine bus.”
The gentle voice persuaded me to try.
“Nonsense. You need help. I’m here. Get in.”
It took every bit of strength to drag my aching, soiled, and broken body into the offered ride. I collapsed on the warm back seat, thankful to see there was no real human at the controls ready to pass judgment, or perhaps even to do me in and throw me out.
After a long sleep, I roused to the delicious smell of hot food and drink. What a nice surprise to see it sitting on a little table within reach. I was starving, and this was so good.
There were clean clothes on the seat next to me, and a large container of water available for bathing. Cozy slippers and a soft, absorbent towel awaited. All I had to do was receive the gift.
By a divine miracle, my tiny, pitiful call for help had been answered. This turn of events was so awesome that I decided to accept and enjoy.
Fortified by sleep, food, a good cleansing, and fresh garments, I was reassured by the healing warmth and now felt bold enough to ask questions.
“Excuse me. Uh, who are you?”
“I was sent to save you from a premature death and to get you on the right road. You’ve been lost for so long.”
Well, that was straightforward enough, but still, I was curious.
“Where are we going?”
“If you let Me drive, you’ll stay on the right path to your destination.”
I felt more peace than I had in my whole life of rattling down bad roads in broken transports, and safe enough to be even more daringly blunt.
“Are you God?”
The voice was so precious and gentle and non-judging, I could almost hear a smile.
“Oh, my dear one, what do you think?”
Pure love rushed in and overwhelmed me. Memories faded of those constant, unforgiving potholes on my turbulent trip through life. I was ecstatic to settle back now and leave the navigating to my Creator, the One who designed the maps and gives perfect direction.
We slowed for the final exit, which was unusually bright. As we gently rose like a celestial plane, I heard a chorus of angelic voices and knew without a doubt that I was home at last!
In all my confusing pathways, there always had been a Saviour to show me which way to roll if I only had asked and obeyed.
It was so beautifully simple! All I had to do was leave the driving to Him.
Why had no one told me?
