Snap was not happy at all. He sat crying in his room because he never had any fun. He was jealous of zippers and buttons. His mother heard him crying and came to see what was wrong.

“Why are you so sad?” she asked. “Are you hurting someplace?”

“No,” he said. “I’m unhappy because I’m different from a zipper. They can be tall or short, and I’m always round, and they can have fun.”

“How can they have fun?” she asked.

“They can slide up and done, up and down, and all I can do is sit where I’m placed.”

“Huh!” She replied. “Sometimes they get stuck, and their owners have very unkind words for them. They may even have to be ripped out of where they were sewn in. That can’t be fun. Is that all that’s wrong?”

“No,” he replied, “I wish I could be a button. They come in all different sizes and shapes and colors, and I never get to change, and they even have eyes. I am always the same.”

“Buttons don’t have it so easy,” his mother said. They can get bumped and even fall off, roll around, and get lost. You wouldn’t like that. Who needs eyes like theirs? They can’t see a thing.”

She patted him like mothers do and told him to be satisfied with who he was. She said, “You were made with a purpose. You should do what you were made to do and be happy. Neither the zipper nor the button has a brother who is always with them, and when you come together with a soft little ‘pop,’ all is well. Just be thankful that you’re you.”
