Speaking with bluntness to Christians, I have so many questions for all of us who claim the name of Jesus. What in the world are we thinking?
Maybe that’s the answer. It’s the world that molds and coaxes and dictates until the pure Word between the pages of our manual of procedure, The Holy Bible, is watered down to become palatable to the masses.
It’s like getting a first-class ticket to a bountiful banquet that we assume only allows us to wait for leftovers, so we finally consume scraps, which fill us up, but lack the true nourishment we need to survive.
Instead of dining at the Captain’s table, per our invitation, we leave our royal ticket crumpled in our pockets and slink off to the steerage with barely sustainable accommodations awaiting. We may grit our teeth and endure the long trip through life, but to what end?
The hunger to know more, and more, and more from the Word of God is a goal worth considering.
Think of the years we spend in school to grasp the basics, and then often more years to perfect a skill or profession. Do we give that much time and effort in the only Book that contains all the secrets to what our Lord promises and expects of us?
Do we skip over the blessings of Psalms and Proverbs with erroneous thinking that, even though they are words of great wisdom and teaching, there is nothing that genuinely will affect our daily lives? But, dear ones, there is!
Distracted by sports, work, culture, and other worldliness is no excuse for a proclaimed Christian’s failure to embrace the whole menu our Creator has provided for the royal feast of believers.
Why do we starve our souls with insufficiency and try to subsist on a few Scriptures we may or may not truly understand as we speak the obligatory Christian-ese language that gives a modicum of temporary, thinly disguised comfort?
Why do we sacrifice the personal calls God provides for us to plumb the mysterious depths waiting for those who are not afraid to honor a covenant, and not merely a contract?
As we hurl toward prophecy’s warning to whatever end awaits, I submit there’s a desperate need, even a clarion call, to those who love God to step up and be counted, to study and learn, to dive those never-before-considered Divine depths and prepare to graduate to our Heavenly home with excitement and joy, with peace, without fear and condemnation, and to the Glory of our Father.
It’s not easy to challenge the demands of the world of regular life issues while we embrace the meaning of our very future in the hereafter, but do we dare to at least give it some thought?
Have we succumbed to the lure of “selfies” to the point that we can’t see past the end of the foolish stick with the camera?
In My Utmost For His Highest, Oswald Chambers, in the June 21st devotional, says, “Are we prepared to purposely disregard ourselves and to launch out into the priestly work of prayer? The continual inner-searching we do in an effort to see if we are what we ought to be generates a self-centered, sickly type of Christianity, not the vigorous and simple life of a child of God.”
Those are eye-opening words, hard to read and even harder for some to implement, but do we dare stick our timid toes in the water that promises and sustains and prepare to launch deeper? I say yes, we do.
