My mind returns to a time in my childhood when we had art classes once a week at school. When I was in the fifth grade, he art teacher gave us the assignment for the next week to sculpt an animal from a bar of soap.
I know you can see where this is going. I began with a paring knife to cut out the shape of a dog, but alas! There was no resemblance to one at all. Undeterred, I thought I would create a bunny. By the time I finished shaping my “animal,” what remained was, not only undistinguishable, but exceedingly small. My parents attempted to hide their smiles when I showed it to them.
When the teacher came by everyone’s desk to examine our products, she took my tiny invention in her hand, said “Hmm,” and moved along to the next person. That was the end of my soap carving.
I smile as I recall that story, but I am mindful that the story did not end there. While God did not, indeed, make me a craftswoman, He did give me a love for words and the joy of reading them and fashioning them into poetry. Also, He gave me a merry heart to be able to laugh at what I cannot do.
