Grace is old. Grace is as old as the world is. It was first shown in the beginning, in the garden of Eden, on that dark morning when the woman that God gave Adam stepped across the separating line and went against God’s command— “Thou shalt not eat…” Genesis 2:5 (KJV): "And she made her husband eat also." It was God’s law, and it had a penalty for breaking it. And the law was, “the day you eat thereof, the day you shall surely die.” That day you shall surely die.
I cannot imagine that dark, terrible morning, here comes Jehovah like a thunder walking through the garden, crying, “Adam, where art thou?” They stood before God condemned, but Grace made a way and promised a Savior. Humanity had to die. Every living thing had to die. But Grace says I would give you a Savior. God’s amazing grace in the garden of Eden, and He gave them the promise of a Just One. Grace did it!
I think about King David and what he did to Bathsheba and Uriah. So horrible was his sin when he ordered Uriah to be killed on the battlefield to take Bathsheba to be his wife. David thought all was well when Uriah died. He forgotten that God sees and knows everything.
One day, God sent the prophet Nathan to him.
“David,” the prophet asked, “Is everything going right?”
“Everything wonderful, live forever! Hallelujah!” David thought that he could have hidden it. But we can hide nothing from God.
God revealed David’s secret sin to the prophet.
2 Samuel 12(KJV). “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him…”
When the prophet finished speaking about what happened to that man and his daughter.
“David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man: and he said to Nathan, As the Lord liveth, the man that had done this thing shall surely die.”
The prophet looked at David and said, “You are the man!” But watch the grace of God, the Spirit struck the prophet and saved David’s life; it was Grace that said, “Surely, you’ll not die, but the sword will not leave your house till it thoroughly purges your heart. For you are that rich man.”
If it hadn’t been for grace, where would we all be? Thank God for grace.
