Stretched, measured, scheduled, counted
Recorded, chased, but never caught.
Sometimes it’s almost found, but then quickly lost as
Our memories rest on its fleeting wings of nostalgia and
Many even serve it for decades at too high a price.
How quickly it slips away, laughing as we cry at the unfairness
Of those untouchable wrinkles that dance, tease, and bully
As we wish and hope and grasp and beg for an extension.
We can kill it, but we can’t see it, hold it, or own it
We hunger for its secret while we regard the mystery
That rules our beings and grips us firmly from cradle to grave.
We even sing wishful songs about storing it in bottles
But there is nothing strong enough or smart enough
To capture it and rewind its insistent, indefinable flow.
Every creation in the universe must march to its drum
Until the call to our final relocation, and then
It embraces us for eternity—bad or good.
Ecclesiastes proclaims there are seasons
and reasons for everything under the sun
And about welcoming each phase with faith and strength.
Like the moon and tide, there’s no control over this invisible
Taskmaster that keeps us perplexed and wondering, so
In our desperation, we invent things that clang and chime.
The best we can do is leave its purpose and particulars
to God as we adhere to the intended linear progression
Of this elusive thing we cannot define or capture, or tame.
This shapeless creation was never meant to stop and
wait for us to engineer or manipulate its divine business
But we do all agree it flies…and definitely has a name.
We simply call it TIME.
