The glory of God filled the whole sky, so it was as bright as day. The shepherds were terrified when the angel spoke to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” Luke 2:10-12 (NKJV).
And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
“Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace. Goodwill toward men!”
So it was when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” Luke 2:13-15 (NKJV).
They quickly led their sheep to the stable where they kept them and immediately left for Bethlehem. As they looked up, they saw a star shining upon them, and they knew that the star came to lead them to where baby Jesus lay. So, they followed the star until it stopped in front of a stable, and when they heard the bleats of a lamb calling her little ones to her side, they knew that baby Jesus was there.
So they hurried inside the stable and found Joseph and Mary, along with Jesus, wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
The shepherds, filled with awe and wonder, returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as the angel told them.
Jesus grew up among his brethren, but they didn't recognize him as the Messiah; Mary and Joseph knew who he was.
One day, when invited to the wedding in Cana of Galilee, both Jesus and his new friends were there. They sat at their assigned tables, and when the wedding festival was in progress, the host discovered that the wine had run out, and some tables had no wine left. The host didn't know what to do. What a disaster! The family of the groom was utterly devastated when they heard about the wine.
In Cana, if the groom doesn't properly entertain his guests, he could face censure.
What a miscalculation! It could have brought severe repercussions on the bridegroom's family, clouded the marriage, and disrupted the couple's standing in the community. The wine, which was supposed to be enough for the celebration, ran out.
Mary saw what happened, and immediately she went into action. She went over to Jesus and told him the situation.
John 2:4-5 (NKJV), Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does your concern have to do with me? My hour has not yet come."
His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it."
Jesus instructed the servants to fill the waterpots with water and pour the water into the jars.
John 2:8 (NKJV), He said, "Draw some out and take it to the master of the feast."
That was the best wine they ever had. All the tables had enough wine for them to celebrate the wedding festivities, which included singing, dancing, and joyful conversations.
Jesus' response signified a new relationship between himself and Mary. He was no longer her obedient son, but also her Messiah, a relationship that would be further revealed in his ministry and ultimately on the cross.
