That I became a wife.
I hoped our love would grow and grow
Throughout our married life.
I thought I’d keep the cleanest house,
But dirt got in the way
I struggled to defeat the stuff
That seemed to want to stay.
I planned to be a gourmet cook,
Though I had never tried
To plan or execute a meal,
Nor helped at Mama’s side.
I hoped that we would never fuss,
Not even disagree,
Forgetting human nature’s ways
How silly could I be?
I thought that when the children came,
I’d be a model mother,
But humanness came through again,
First one way, then another.
The house is not cleaned spotlessly,
But best that I am able.
Though meals are not cooked perfectly,
He eats what’s on the table.
The children turned out better than
I’d ever dreamed they would.
In spite of the mistakes I made,
The Lord used them for good.
My expectations were quite high.
It’s not I didn’t care,
But aspirations’s not enough.
It takes hard work and prayer.
The love that we had years ago
Has never yet grown old.
In fact, when all the truth is told,
It’s grown a million-fold.
