She had aspired for years to hold a child of her own, to soothe whimpers, to fold diapers fresh from the dryer. The desires continued to slip through her fingers like sand. The yearly celebration of motherhood only wrestled tears from her eyes as cruel pains harpooned her soul, leaving her flexing empty hands.
“My turtledove, are you okay?” her husband, Elkanah, whispered, placing a calloused hand over hers. His words and warmth comforted, but the ancient ache surged inside.
“I’m here, again,” she said softly. “Nothing has worked for us. Inside-it feels like emptiness and despair. I haven’t praised God in months, and it all feels so hopeless.”
“Your love is enough for me,” Elkanah said. “We’re in this together. Why don’t you check out the cafeteria while I attend my elder’s meeting? All these tests are going to take a while.”
Next to the cafeteria sat a simple chapel. Hannah glanced in the open door. A single candle burned next to an open Bible. A few gladiolas flowed out of a crystal vase. Six small benches nestled on a sea of burgundy.
Slipping in, she breathed in the faint aroma of old wood and candle wax. She sank to her knees, and the words and tears spilled out like floodwaters. “God, if You give me a son, I’ll give him back to You. All his days will be Yours.”
An hour later, the Chaplain on duty, his nametag sporting ‘Eli,’ knelt beside her. “Are you alright, ma’am?”
Hannah wiped her tears with the sleeve of her blouse, embarrassed. “I-I was praying for something impossible.”
“Impossible, you say?” He reached for the Bible and held it up. “Impossible? Like crossing the Red Sea? Like overcoming the walls of Jericho? Like taking down giants with a sling shot, or surviving in a furnace? Like feeding 5000 with five loaves and two fish?”
She nodded. “Something like that.”
“Nothing is impossible with God,’ Eli said. “Keep praying and trusting. He hears even this. None of your tears are wasted.”
The year of despair turned into a year of praise as Hannah returned to the chapel, arms and heart full. She cradled her newborn wrapped in cotton blankets, diapers fresh, his tiny fists curled, and his faint breath sweet with milk. The baby powder lingered as she let her son wrap his fingers around her thumb.
Elkanah plumped himself down in the waiting room, fresh from the vending machine. “How’s Samuel? Do you think that Chaplain is ready to dedicate him?”
“I’ve texted and made the arrangements,” Hannah said. “He liked the name Samuel, because it stands for ‘The Lord heard me,' and that’s what he told me. ‘Nothing is impossible with God.’”
Elkanah kissed her forehead as they rose to enter the sacred space. Three of the nurses and a clerk stepped in behind them. Eli stood waiting. He took the boy in his arms and blessed the fruit of Hannah’s womb. Hannah sang:
“My heart praises the Lord! My strength comes from him. He lifts the poor from the dust; He seats the broken with honor. He has turned my despair into hope; my aspiration into a testimony of grace.’"
Many of us carry emptiness and aches inside. We have dreams of healing, reconciliation, purpose, family, and peace. Unfulfilled desires can pull us toward despair, nourishing doubt that our prayers are heard at all. We sit alone in waiting rooms or sacred spaces.
Hannah’s story reminds us that God is attentive-He hears. Our whispered prayers, our unshed tears, our hidden pains, our sleepless nights, weights too heavy to bear- he knows and sees them. Although his timing may be slower than we hope, He is good, and nothing is impossible with Him.
Perhaps you aspire for something that seems impossible: a restored marriage, a child, a fresh start, freedom from addiction, peace after loss. Like Hannah, your heart is raw. Bring it to the healer.
When he answers—whether as you dream or in a different, deeper way—remember to stop, hold the miracle closer, and lift your voice in praise. Remember Hannah’s chorus. “My heart praises the Lord!”
