But before we get serious, let’s look past the fear barrier and lighten up a little. Snakes have many good points - too many for us to re-mamba them all - and I’ll list a few…
Snakes never interrupt conversations or bore us with bad jokes or exaggerations, and they never spread gossip. They aren’t slaves to fashion; they never have to face surgery to replace hips or knees; they never trip over anything; and arthritis will never affect their shoulders, their wrists, or their ankles.
They never complain about cold weather. And could summer ever be more relaxing than simply draping yourself around shady branches or stretching out on a flat rock to soak up the sun?
Let’s also think about how much help they are – and have been – for so long. Even green snakes, before they ever ripen.
To keep diseases at bay, snakes consume vermin like rats or mice, and for some, this skill reaches its pinnacle in their ability to consume larger animals like rabbits, monkeys and even wild pigs - without bothering to chew them. You might find that hard to swallow, but it’s true.
For ladies, a warm and elegant fashion accessory is to drape a feather boa over their neck, while snakes made from thicker material are often placed at the bottom of doors to keep the drafts out.
And isn’t driving in the rain much safer when we switch on our vinshield vipers???
It might also be worth exploring a couple of genuinely misrepresented historical events to show clear examples of misnaken identity…
Snakes from the adder family have always enhanced mathematics studies, but the hypotenuse of a right-angle triangle remained a mystery until everyone discovered Pythonagoras’ Theorem!
Ancient history was irrevocably changed by the small snake that ended Cleopatra’s asp-irations of linking Egypt with the Roman Empire, whose conquest of Britain was delayed because of the courageous resistance inspired by another snake – Queen Boa Dicea!
But enough of this levity. Let’s check into this fear of snakes…
Back when time began, in the perfect setting of a garden, a serpent deceived a young couple into doubting God’s generosity. Assuring them that they would be like God – in knowing good and evil - he wasn’t totally honest. Instead of ignoring him, they fell for his persuasion. True, they found the difference between good and evil, but from that moment on, while they desired to do what was right, they were dismayed and ashamed to find that evil was too powerful for them.
That same serpent has given snakes a bad reputation ever since, but his days are numbered.
One set of numbers is in Revelation 12:9-11, which describes an enormous cosmic, spiritual battle at the end of time. This battle ends with the serpent being cast down forever - with no further power to accuse, to distort, or to divide the people of God.
Despite the serpent knowing that this defeat is his final demise, he
continues his deceit. So, if there is ever a newspaper in Heaven, I’m sure that it will never carry a banner headline like “GOD’S GREATEST PRESENT - SERPENT REPENTS!”

As a side note -I so rarely have time these days to read the articles as I've done in the past- and when I see the entries, I realize how talented all these writers are, and how much I miss reading them. I have to make a "mental note" and concerted effort to read them again - I'm missing out on all the fun!
