This couldn’t be happening again! Please God!
It was Mothers’ Day when I received the following email from Grace in Kenya.
I want to confess something that keeps disturbing me. You have been my mother from the time you chose me as your daughter, and I believe what I'll tell you today won't change anything. I know it will be a disappointment to you, but it is what it is Mummy.
I visited Charles (father of Grace’s daughter.) . . . We were intimate . . . And then Charles started saying he's not responsible for that pregnancy. God knows he is . . . and I don't have any other man in my life. . . . So to cut the story short, I have a month old baby boy. . . That is what has always been on my mind to tell you.
Three months earlier, Grace’s grandmother died and Grace and her daughter, Loice, traveled to Uganda for the burial. While she was there, although I’ve never had any contact with Charles, I received a flood of unsettling emails from him that caused me to ask Grace, Are you pregnant?
I believe this is when Grace chose to listen to the serpent, the father of lies, rather than to the Spirit of truth.
No, she wrote, she was not pregnant but Charles was spreading gossip about her, lying about her being pregnant, having beaten her and taken her phone and mobile wallet.
I was suspicious but made the choice to believe her, in spite of her never having told us any of this about Charles before.
My sister and I urged her to stay in Uganda and told her the job that supported her in Kenya was done! Her salary made her vulnerable. We told her we might find a way to support her in Uganda if she had oversight, but we could no longer send her money that put her in danger.
However, she didn’t hear or believe we were serious. She returned to Kenya. We stopped sending a salary.
For three months she kept up the deception—even after the baby boy was born!
Finally, desperate and penniless, she was confessing—a replay of her deception five years earlier when she didn’t tell me she had a daughter, Loice. The confessions came only because the babies could no longer be hidden from me.
The pregnancies didn’t trouble me as much as the deception.
I was angry about the lack of repentance. No awareness of offending God.
She said she was sorry. Our relationship’s foundation required my trusting her word. Could I trust her again? I knew Jesus gave me no choice but to forgive her.
Then, to my dismay, instead of enduring difficult consequences for her deception and lack of repentance, God presented a miraculous opportunity for her. Still deaf and blinded by the serpent, at first she actually turned down the gift. That’s a story my sister will tell. Bonnie took no offense and was determined to seek an embracing Christian home for Grace.
And God responded to Bonnie’s plea for Grace far above what any of us could have imagined. Everyone was rejoicing at God’s generosity—except me.
I tossed and turned night after night with distress over the Lord’s seemingly unwise gifts, given before there was evidence of true repentance.
One dawn, I awoke with a clear awareness of the Prodigal’s Father showing me that my dismay at His generosity reflects my Elder Sister attitude that expects our Father to only give to us what is earned or deserved!
My attitude was not reflecting the Father’s right to give grace to us sinners. He chooses to be generous! “Don’t I have the right?” He asks. “Or are you envious because I am generous?”
I’m not envious, because God has been so generous with me. However, I was judging our Father’s judgment in being so generous to Grace before I saw deep repentance over the moral failures.
I found myself day after day needing to repent again as my judgment of Grace’s deception and of our Father’s generosity resurfaced. How grateful I am for the Lord’s willingness to forgive my judging again—and again.
What has finally helped me let go? The Lord graciously but firmly spoke these words: “Let ME handle this concern of yours. Trust Me.”
Thankfully, measuring repentance is no longer my business. I’m happy to see God present His gifts of grace to Grace—and to me.
Thank you God.

Violated trust is never easy to grow through, but when innocent children are involved, we can do little else but err on the side of generosity for their sakes. We dare not punish them for their parents' sins, and only God's grace and truth can sustain us through the constant uncertainty.
