One dreary cloud-grayed day, Emmaus heard a shout ringing down from the rock above.
“Get back down to your hut, you filthy pig!” shouted the arrogant voice. “You’ll never be one of us.”
Needless to say, this was not the first time one of the poor had tried to ascend mountain to the realm of the rich and powerful only to be rejected by them. At least some merciful rich soul had legislated against throwing such invaders over the cliff. Still, the insurmountable gulf remained.
Paul had finally made it to the top after all those years of trying. Paul had told Emmaus of the glamor they would find there. Happiness itself dwelt there, he said. Emmaus chose to stay in his humble village. No, things were not the best down there, but he doubted joining the ranks of the mighty would solve his problems. So he waited —waited for the answer.
—————
That night Emmaus fell asleep in the dirt-floored hut in which he lived. A dream unfolded before him. There he saw a cliff behind the one on which the rich built their abodes —a cliff that seemed to reach the clouds.
Emmaus raised his eyes to see the top, but a great light as a palace of pure gold in the morning sun shone so brightly he could not look at it.
A loud voice boomed from the heights. “Let us go down to visit them.”
A great light like the sun moved out from the brilliance and slowly descended the face of the great cliff. As is reached the cliff of the lords, it condensed into the appearance of a brilliant star. As Emmaus watched in awe, its form changed still more.
By the time it neared the valley floor, it appeared like a newborn baby. The baby grew until it was a grown man as it neared the valley floor.
Suddenly, Emmaus saw some of the lords at the cliff top looking down with angry faces. They shouted one to another how to stop the One who descended. They hurled things at Him but could not stop Him. All their efforts were in vain against the Light that came down. Nails thrown down from the hands of angry lords pierced his hands and feet. One at the cliff top even threw a spear to pierce His side. The world went dark. Had they really killed the Prince of Light? The ground shook with terrible force as though the world itself mourned the death of The Light.
Emmaus quaked in terror wondering what would become of them. A small spark of light broke the darkness growing into a light like the morning sun. The Man had come back to life! Scars in His hands, feet, and side remained, but He was alive! With open arms, He walked among the people of the village who came out to meet Him. Children and adults alike ran into His sheltering arms.
Of course, there were some who stood by and claimed it was all fake. These said that no one had come down from above. Indeed, they denied that the higher cliff even existed above the cliff of the lords. Yet for those who found shelter in His loving arms, no one could disprove the joy they found.
Seeing the joy of those who came to Him, a few of the lords even came down to the valley to see for themselves. Some even came to Him, though most rejected Him. Emmaus fell on his knees before the One who had crossed the great distance to come down to them.
A voice so strong and yet so full of love, a voice like none Emmaus had ever heard before spoke but one word. “Emmaus.”
