Her father’s voice echoed in her mind: “You can’t outrun your shadows, girl.” He’d said it the day she left home, ten years ago, chasing dreams of city lights and freedom from the weight of her mistakes. Now, she was back, chasing the ghost of that girl who’d broken her family’s heart.
The truck slowed as she neared the family ranch, its weathered sign reading “Chase Acres.” The irony wasn’t lost on her. Her great-grandfather had chased gold in these hills, only to settle for cattle and a legacy of stubborn faith. The land was etched with his pursuit, just as Sarah’s soul was marked by hers.
She parked by the barn, where her brother, Caleb, was mending a fence. His eyes, sharp as the barbed wire he twisted, softened when he saw her. “Didn’t expect you back,” he said, wiping sweat from his brow.
“Didn’t expect to be here,” Sarah replied, her voice chasing steadiness. “Mama’s sick. I had to come.”
Caleb nodded, his silence heavy. Sarah followed him to the house, her boots kicking up dust that felt like guilt. Inside, her mother lay frail in a bed by the window, her Bible open to Psalm 23. Sarah’s throat tightened. “He restores my soul,” she whispered, the words chasing away the lump in her chest.
“Sarah?” Her mother’s voice was a thread. “You’re home.”
“For now,” Sarah said, sitting beside her. She wanted to chase away the years of absence, the nights she’d drowned her shame in whiskey. Instead, she held her mother’s hand, feeling the weight of grace in that touch.
Later, under a sky stitched with stars, Sarah walked to the creek behind the house. As a child, she’d chased fireflies here, giggling as they danced just out of reach. Now, she chased clarity, her thoughts tangling like the willows along the bank. She’d spent years pursuing empty things—money, men, moments that burned out fast. Each chase left her hollow, like a dog chasing its tail.
The word chase flickered in her mind, a double-edged sword. To pursue, yes, but also to engrave, to carve meaning into something fleeting. Her great-grandfather had chased wealth but found purpose in this land. Her mother chased faith, etching God’s promises into her heart. What was Sarah chasing? What would she carve into her life?
She knelt by the creek, the cold water kissing her fingers. “Create in me a clean heart, O God,” she prayed, the words of Psalm 51 rising unbidden. They felt like a chisel, shaping her raw edges. For the first time, she didn’t want to chase shadows; her past, her pain. She wanted to chase the Light.
Back at the house, Caleb sat on the porch, strumming a guitar. “You staying?” he asked, his voice gentle.
Sarah hesitated, then nodded. “I think I’m done running. I want to chase something real.”
He smiled, the kind that chased away doubt. “Good. We could use you here.”
The next morning, Sarah helped Caleb with the cattle, her hands relearning the rhythm of the ranch. The work was hard, but it felt like worship, each task a step toward restoration. She wasn’t naïve, shadows would linger, and some chases would fail. But as she looked across Chase Acres, the land her family had carved with faith, she felt a spark of hope.
Sarah was no longer chasing the wind. She was chasing a legacy, one etched in love, grounded in grace, and pointed toward eternity.
