Wearing a shabby coat,
He appeared at our back door
On one cold winter day.
As soon as he drew near,
I was startled to observe
He had one brown eye and one blue.
Since he looked very hungry,
I offered him some food,
Which he accepted eagerly.
He became a familiar sight
As he trudged up and down our street,
Where he would make stops
At our house and others for food.
He began to look healthier
With a fuller body,
But he still wore a shabby coat.
He was very distinctive in appearance
With His eyes of two colors.
Then one day we missed him
And wondered where he’d gone.
When he finally showed up,
We were surprised at how much
His appearance had changed.
No longer dirty and ragged,
He wore what looked to be
A shiny new coat.
Neighbors down the street
Had taken him in and
Changed his life with love.
Like the little dog,
Who still visited occasionally,
Every single one of us
Is uniquely different,
And it’s God’s love for us
That brings out our best.
