Topic: Iris (04/17/25)
When I looked up the word iris and saw that it is also the name of a flower with a biblical meaning, I thought of the lily flower, which also carries a biblical symbol.

I discovered that the name "iris" comes from the Greek word for rainbow, connecting this flower to God's covenant with Noah and all of creation.
Genesis 9:13(NKJV), God says, "I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth." With its wide range of colors, the iris can remind us of this divine promise and God's faithfulness throughout the generations.

I am intrigued by the meaning and symbols of these two beautiful flowers: the iris and the lily. Some scholars believe that they belong in the same category of flowers.

Contemplating their beauty, I am drawn to the spiritual truths they embody. The iris, with its vibrant hues, and the lily, with its delicate grace, both symbolize purity, renewal, faith, hope, and the beauty of creation. Their blooming in the spring is a testament to the promise of new life, filling us with a sense of wonder and awe.

Each flower has unique characteristics. The iris symbolizes Christ's passion for humanity, His sacrifice for us to have a steadfast and sure hope of eternal life, and the faith to believe what Calvary did for us. It teaches us about God's love, mercy, and grace.

With its divine connection, the iris holds a sacred position in God's economy. This economy, His plan of redemption, is a mystery where God freely distributed Himself in the man Christ Jesus for the salvation of our souls. The iris's position in this economy symbolizes Christ's passion, sacrifice, and faith in His love, mercy, and grace, fostering a sense of connection and understanding.

"Consider the lilies how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith? And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind." Luke 12:27-29 (NKJV).

Ephesians 3:21(NKJV) To Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

As we consider these flowers, we are reminded of God's providence and care for His creation. We are to trust in God's provision and to find joy and peace in His mighty work of love and grace.

The iris holds great significance in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and it gives us the hope of a better life on earth and life eternal.

As we take God at His Word, He will make us pure as the lily. He will take our vile conscience of sin, change the course of our lives, and make us new creatures in His Son, Christ Jesus, for His honor and His Glory.
