MODERN WOMAN HAS A STACK OF BILLS IN FRONT OF HER
Rivers. For some reason, the word river keeps running through my mind. River, running ha. (BITTER LAUGH)
I seem to have a river of debt running through my life. So many bills.
And a river of responsibilities, so many things to do, people who need my help.
And rivers of regret, what-ifs, and might-have-beens.
It all seems so impossible. Those rivers seem so impassable.
And then I hear the voice of my unsympathetic “friends,” “Oh, cry me a river.”
And I think of the Israelites traveling through the wilderness, who encountered a seemingly impassible river. I wonder what it would have been like to be one of those Israelites.
PUTS ON BIBLICAL HEADDRESS
“Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you” (Joshua 3:5 NIV.) That’s what Joshua told us yesterday. I want to believe him. But we have been in the wilderness SOOO long. I was just a child when we left Egypt. So much has happened, and yet not what we were hoping for. I’m not sure what we’re hoping for, the Promised Land, I suppose.
When Moses died, I thought the promise had died as well. But God has chosen Joshua to lead us. But there’s that huge river between us and the Promised Land, and it’s at flood stage. How will we ever get across it?
What’s Joshua having the priests do? He’s having them walk into the river carrying the ark on poles. But they’ll drown! My husband is one of those priests!
My heart wants to scream out STOP! But I must trust Joshua, I must trust Jehovah. He has brought us this far. Our sandals haven’t worn out, our clothing hasn’t worn out. He gives us manna every day. He is looking after us.
TURNS AROUND AND HAS BACK TO AUDIENCE
I can’t look.
WHIPS AROUND
I can’t NOT look. HOLD HAND IN FRONT OF FACE AND PEERS THROUGH THE FINGERS>
They’ve entered the water….
TAKES HAND DOWN. And the water has stopped! And it’s even backed up to upstream. It’s a miracle!...
Of course it is, Jehovah is our miracle-working God.
REACHES DOWN AND TOUCHES THE GROUND. And somehow, the river bed is not even muddy. It is completely DRY. How is that possible? Our Jehovah, the God of the impossible.
Thanks to Jehovah, we have crossed the impassible river. Joshua is telling the priests to take stones to build a memorial. WATCHES The last priest has left the river. The water is flooding back into the river bed! The river is back to flood stage.
We have done it! We’ve made it into the Promised Land! No, that’s wrong. We didn’t do anything. Jehovah has brought us into the Promised Land. We must never forget. That’s why the stones. But it’s not enough to build the memorial on the land, we must build it in our hearts, our minds, and our memories.
God is our protector
God is our provider
He has proved it again and again.
WOMAN REMOVES HEADDRESS
REPEATS
God is our protector
God is our provider
He has proved it again and again
It’s not going to be easy. But I will make it through all these rivers of my life…with God’s help.
When troubles come like a river
And I only have a sliver
Of hope, of faith
God takes me by the hand
With Him I can withstand
All the woes
Here it goes!
The waters will part
I just need to start
And God will be there
The whole time
