Is a normal mainstay
For regular folks,
Though for a night owl it provokes
Such a strong reaction
That he makes a subtraction.
His habitual sleep
Is often so deep
And long lasting
He has no time for breakfasting.
He’s no cereal offender
As a weekender,
For right through the week
In vain will you seek
To see him near dawning
On any morning.
It’s not so surprising
To see him arising
Not fresh-faced at seven,
But nearer to ten or eleven,
When he has a hunch
That it’s too early for lunch.
Yet hunger pangs are so strong
That he can’t wait that long.
So he starts makin’
Some eggs, ham, and bacon,
And coffee and toast,
To get the most
Benefit he can muster
From the cluster
Of food in the pantry.
Which makes it all quite “alimantry.”
The night owl has many friends,
Whose sleep also extends
So close to each midday
That it’s come to the crunch
That they as a bunch
Have a combined breakfast and lunch
And they’re calling it brunch!
Yet this poetic interlude,
That’s so focused on food,
Maust carry some warning
With relevance beyond morning.
For we dare not make mirth,
That the weak shall inherit the girth!
