On that Sabbath day, he entered the synagogue as usual, not knowing that the day would be memorable for him and the congregation. He greeted the priest as usual and joined the congregation to sing the songs of Jehovah. After the singing, the priest gave Him the book to read. But this day was different.
In Luke 4 :16–20 (KJV) it says:
16] And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day and stood up for to read.
[17] And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
[18] The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
[19] To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
[20] And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
They were all astonished at what they heard and were speechless at the moment of His revelation. Their spiritual eyes were opened, and they saw the prophet Esaias's prophecy made flesh in front of them. But they couldn't believe it—it was incredible!
Jesus said, "This day is the scripture fulfilled in your ears," Luke 4:21 (KJV). They saw it, and now Jesus confirmed who He was, the Messiah.
"And all bare witness and wondered at his gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, is not this Joseph's son." Luke 4:22 (KJV).
You could have heard a pin drop on the floor in the congregation. They were all dumbfounded as they stood in awe. Eventually, they all left the synagogue, confounded by what they heard and saw.
Everything that happened that day contradicted their understanding of who the Messiah would be and how he would come. They probably had thought that the person would have come down the corridors of heaven, gone to the high priest, and said, "Here I am, Caiaphas!" But God didn't do it that way because it was not written in the Word that way. The Word said that He would come just the way He came.
"Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! "For who has known the mind of the LORD?" Romans 11:33-36 (NKJV).
