“No, we were never friends. She’s married now, with kids. We haven’t anything in common.”

Shannon and Alicia had mutually agreed that they were frenemies. They were the only 12-year-olds living on the FEBC compound in the Philippines and had no one else to hang out with. However, their strengths and weaknesses clashed. So theirs was a friendship only because of default mode or survival instincts.
I can still see their tanned legs beneath their shorts and cool blouses, running like colts in the field, chasing each other, warning, yelling back and forth about “boa constrictors in the mango trees. “ Yes, fear will feed a friendship—if they trust one another.
They could be at peace with each other if curled up in separate corners reading. They both loved books and like Diane and Anne of Green Gables, had much “scope for imagination.” But they were not kindred spirits.
They loved acting out Little Women but each demanded the role of Jo.
And they each had to be “right.” The most memorable example of their frenemy relationship for me is when they noisily tracked me down, obviously at odds with one another and Shannon begged, “Mom, tell her! Tell her the Bible says you’re not supposed to hit BACK!”

Alicia left another message, but Shannon didn’t pick up the phone. I shouldn’t have been surprised.
