“You’re wasting your time,” Hailey texted. “There are over 114 million active YouTube channels. Yours would be a grain of sand on the beach. People would walk on by and not even notice you.”
“Not only that,” Mervin added. “There’s also TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and X. You’d be one in a trillion. They’re all trying to snag consumers through entertainment, information, promotions, and advertising. What do you have to offer?”
“I could offer a presence, friendship, faith.”
“Good luck!” Hailey texted again. “People earn thousands online every month because they know how to milk the system. What do you know? You need a name in your community. What kind of content are you offering that matters? You don’t even have a cat you can dress up.”
“I could talk about how even though the war took my legs, it didn’t take my life. I can talk about how I found hope and faith in the dark valleys of shadows when everything seemed lost. Mostly, I can listen to others when they struggle.”
“Kid,” Mervin said. “People are too busy to tell you what’s going on inside. You aren’t a shrink. You’re not qualified to be an online therapist.”
“God gave me two ears. I think that’s enough to get started. I’ve got His Word and His Spirit. If it doesn’t work then fine. At least I’ve tried.”
Grace, a new presence chimed in. “You might be onto something Des. If you’re serious about this then be meticulous in choosing your niche. You’ll need to be passionate and dedicated. Stay true to who you are and don’t let outsiders dissuade you. Let your faith center you. Be relevant to what people are going through. Know what you’re trying to say. Invest in some good equipment.”
“Thanks, Grace,” Desmond said. “I guess I need encouragement more than anything. Jesus met me in a dark space and l have been trying to figure out how to be light and salt when I’m trapped in my basement.”
Hailey texted again. “Okay, if you’re determined to go all kamikaze on this venture, make sure you edit your stuff, cross-promote to other platforms, set regular publishing days, and connect with your subscribers in the comment section.”
Mervin chimed in. “Treat your vlog like a business: set your goals, apply strategic marketing, beef up your social media presence.”
“Sounds like you know something about this,” Desmond said. “Do you want to be part of my team?”
Hailey jumped on her WattsApp video call. “Count me in! I’ve seen dozens of videos on this stuff but I’ve been too scared to do it alone. I could work with a team.”
“We’ve got to listen to our audience,” Melvin added. “We’ve got to collaborate with other vloggers, watch out for the trends and keep our verbal skills sharp.”
“We do, do we?” Grace chimed in. “I think we also need to pray for wisdom. If God isn’t in this, we are just another grain of sand on a beach. Think of this venture as a farmer sewing seed on all kinds of soil.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Desmond said. “Let’s put our heads together and see what God can do.”
“Should we brainstorm ideas on what we can do?” Desmond asked.
“How about ‘Parables for the Modern World?’” Grace suggested.
“How about ‘Finding Your Feet When You Haven’t Got Any Legs To Stand On?’” Melvin said.
“How about ‘Standing Out When You Can’t Stand Up!’” Hailey said.
Desmond cleared his throat. “Sounds like each of you have something to say. Why don’t you each develop what God has put on your minds? I think I’m going to start talking about ‘Finding Faith in A World of Fear.’”
Grace recruited her teenage son to manage the tech side of things and within ten days there were four scripts to add to the mix in cyberspace. She nudged Desmond as they prepared for their first vlog.
“Thanks for daring to dream and for pulling us into something we were too afraid to do alone.”
Desmond smiled. “Here we go.”
